Connecting women our health, our lives, our worlds

When we talk about ‘health’, we are talking about a social view of health (also referred to by the World Health Organisation as the ‘social determinants of health’ http://www.who.int/social_determinants/en/), and that’s a much bigger picture. (See also: The Social Determinants Alliance http://socialdeterminants.org.au/ )

Hospitals, medical professionals and medicines are very important, but they are only one piece of the puzzle. The social view of health looks at the many different forces that can affect our health such as: where we live (for example, the tropics, the desert, the city, the outback), culture, transport, gender, ability, violence, employment and housing.
